About Levi

“Levi is a 1,5-year-old female Pitbull diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and secondary bacterial pyoderma. She was seen by Dr. Heidi Schroeder who promptly put her on the Zoetis itch tablet twice a day for 2 weeks as well as the Zoetis antibiotic and medicated shampoos and started a diet trial.”

Her progress

“She responded extremely well and improved almost immediately. After 2 weeks the Zoetis itch tablet was decreased to once a day and continued with the Zoetis antibiotic, medicated shampoos and diet trial. After 8 weeks, food allergy was ruled out and atopic dermatitis diagnosed. We then performed allergy testing which showed that she is allergic to 21 different allergens.”

Going forward

“Currently she is only on the Zoetis itch tablet once a day and is still bathed with the medicated shampoos every 2 to 3 weeks. She flared up when we tried to give the Zoetis tablet every second day and recovered immediately when back on the Zoetis tablet once a day. She is doing very well. We are currently busy with desensitisation and she might need less medication once the vaccine ‘kicks in’. The Zoetis itch tablet really changed her and our life!”

About Duffy

Duffy is a 3-year-old white Bull Terrier. He has always had the red itchy skin. We have done food trials with very little effect.

“I do not keep him on cortisone, we mainly use it when he has a bad flare up. Keeping him on a low dose till skin looks better then tapering off. His last flare up was his worst, and even on prednisolone was still very uncomfortable, I started him on the Zoetis once a day treatment and by the next day he was no longer scratching and by day 3 saw a marked improvement. I love seeing his white belly instead of pink.”

About Peanut

“Peanut is a 13 year old Jack Russel that was the smallest of the litter and the children called him Peanut. He was given to me cause they couldn’t find a home for him. He has been struggling with allergies for years and we have never quite found the source – tried all the usual things like fish oil, special shampoo, change in food!”

Itch free and no flare ups

“Finally the only thing that worked was cortisone in small doses every day and an increase when he experienced flare ups. We moved to the Zoetis once a day tablet for itch and I can’t believe the difference! He has been itch free with no flare ups and none of the side effects of cortisone! The poor boy is not hungry all the time anymore and his coat has approved so much! Big fan of the Zoetis once a day tablet!”

About Luci

“Approximately 5 years ago Luci developed allergies. Her symptoms consisted of itching and biting herself. The vets at the time had advised we put her on cortisone whenever the symptoms got too extreme. This was done on and off for 5 years. She was also given antibiotics for infections caused by her biting herself.”

Cortisone – not a long-term solution

“We realised after some time that the cortisone was not a long-term solution to this, as such we started seeking out alternative remedies. This led to Luci receiving treatment from a holistic vet. This went on for 5 months and Luci’s condition deteriorated to the point where she had lost a large portion of her hair, her skin had turned to an almost black colour and developed Malassezia yeast infection. She itched incessantly and regularly bit and/or scratched to the point where she would draw blood. She was weighing a healthy 24kgs and by December 2020 she was weighing 17kgs. This was a skinny, hairless, black skinned, very sad and depressed dog. However, after those 5 months we could not watch our Luci get any worse, she was not improving – at all.”

Taking Luci to the vet

“We took Luci to see Dr Lang at the Newton Park Animal Hospital, he immediately put her onto the Zoetis once a day tablet, within a day Luci had essentially stopped scratching all together. We’re 3 months into the treatment with the Zoetis itch tablet and Luci has grown all her hair back (Despite Dr Lang initially expressing concern that we should not expect all her hair to grow back), her skin has returned to a normal colour, she is back to a healthy weight. Over and above the drastic physical improvement she is back to her happy, full of life and energetic self. We are so happy with the treatment, we were honestly afraid that there was no hope for our precious Luci, but here we are, and Luci could not be better. Thank you Zoetis and Dr Lang.”
